1st round of « CRTR – DUBAI CLUB » 2016, at Madeira Island

The Porto Moniz county, in Madeira Island, hosted last 21 February the first race from the third edition of the offroad endurance championship « CRTR – Dubai Club », organized by the « Núcleo 4×4 do Clube Desportivo e Cultural do Porto Moniz ». This event, the first out of four in 2016 season, took place at the locally famous « Pista dos Lamaceiros » circuit.

After the 2014 and 2015 successfull seasons, the public answered positively once more and showed up in large numbers to vibrate again with the skills of the teams in overcoming the various obstacles they had on the track. The fact that there are big noveltys in the car park of the competition for 2016 generated a lot of expectation among the offroad enthusiasts from this beautiful Portuguese island in the middle of the atlantic. Many were those who wanted to see in first hand the new machines.

The technical and documentary checks took place in the morning, followed by the Qualification stage, where for the first time this year the machines were driven at a racing pace. Here, the teams of the two classes, Promoção and Extreme, tried the best lap time in order to secure a better position on the starting grid for the race that would take place on that afternoon. In Promoção class, the fastest team on the track was the « Vulcanizadora 25 de Abril », that with its renewed Toyota flew around the track spending 2m01s, winning 1 extra point for the overall standings of the championship. On the Extreme class, « Madventure4x4 », in their Suzuki Proto, beat the competition making 2m06s, and also added one extra point.

In the afternoon the 2 hours endurance race took place, where teams of both classes lined up side by side on the starting grid. During the race, there were several sections of the track that were common to all teams, and others that were unique to each class, differing from each other mainly by the difficulty of the obstacles created by the organization.

In class Promoção, the first leader of the race was « Land 4×4 Madeira », but shortly after the first hour « Vulcanizadora 25 de Abril », from Nuno Berenguer/Nélio Sousa driving a Toyota LJ70, took the lead and managed to hold it until the end with a fast and steady pace, making a total of 19 laps. The « Land 4×4 Madeira », from Omar Silva/Vitor Silva in a Land Rover Defender, after a good race start, managed to get the second place with 18 laps, after a slightly problematic last half of the race. The third place was obtained by « Team Fora-de-Estrada », from Luis Filipe/Cristiano Silva, driving a very reliable Toyota BJ40, making a score of 17 laps on the circuit.
Four other teams also competed in the Promoção class. The « Auto Jeitinho B », from Norberto Santos/Damásio Figueira in Toyota BJ40, with 13 laps; the « FPF Preparações 4×4 », from Paulo Franco/Valter Góis in Suzuki Vitara, also with 13 laps; « Team Monster », from Alexandre Pereira/Emanuel Jesus in Suzuki Vitara with 3 laps; and « Auto Jeitinho », from Alexandre Santos/Luís Barreto in Toyota BJ40 with 2 laps. All these teams naturally scored for the championship, despite not having achieved a place in the top three.

Concerning the Extreme class, the team « Prego & Prato », which debuted their exciting
prototype vehicle « OGUM », led their class since the beggining of the 2 hours race. But they
were always under pressure, in an early stage by the team « Auto Palmeira », and later on by
« Auto Prestígio ». But the duo Carlos Costa/ Roberto Flor managed to withstand the pressure
and took their brand new machine to the final victory with 15 laps. In an honorable second
place, with the same number of laps, « Auto Prestígio », from Armando Jardim/Miguel Ângelo in
Toyota BJ73, made a strong race from back to front, showing to all the other teams that they
cannot be forgotten on the three remaing rounds from this championship. At the lowest
position of the podium, having lost a lot of time in the pits in the first half of the race, the team
« Madventure4x4 », from Rui Freitas/Hélder Catanho in Suzuki Proto, with 10 laps. Their rithym
on the track confirmed that if they didn´t have the winch problem, the struggle for the victory
in Extreme class would have been even more enthusiastic.

At the Extreme class were ranked two other teams. « Auto Palmeira », from Américo
Freitas/Tiago Freitas in Nissan Patrol, with 8 laps, making a promising race beginning, but then
being victims of some problems in their car, not being able to maintain the same pace through
the race; and the « ASH Team », from Adriano Santos/Elsa Henriques (the only lady to be on a
co-driver seat at endurance races in Portugal) in a Toyota BJ40, that had an unlucky day and
after an early breakdown on the rear axle , only managed to complete 1 lap.

The second round of « CRTR – Dubai Club » 2016 will take place on April the 10th, with the
return of the characteristic endurance races enthusiasm to the « Pista dos Lamaceiros » circuit,
located at Porto Moniz county, northern coast of Madeira Island.
